So many new databases coming out and it doesn't seem like many people use them. Do you guys think any of these will make it?

Some of them. NoSQL is popular with some groups, MariaDB is slowly replacing MySQL. I just read about some new database that was developed (I think) by a graduate student at MIT. It focuses on being optimized for scientific research & analysis. Basically, it's designed to be easy to pull lots of small pieces of data from it very quickly. Very nice for number crunching, etc.

Each one has it's place, but most people are fine with using MySQL, Oracle, etc since that's what works and that's what they've used.
