I'm curious about this. I grew up hearing references to Unix being an old thing, which no-one really uses any more. My first two OS were Windows 3.1 and MS-DOS, so that was quite a while ago. Now I very rarely hear the word Unix, unless it's something like 'This system was is similar to Unix' or something along those lines.

Yea unix was built at Bell Labs a while ago and is no longer in wide use. Though there are alot of unix based kernels around such as linux and BSD. Even the Mac OS is Unix based. They basically all borrow the same ideas of how the OS should operate.

You should know that UNIX is being used all over the world but it is only used at business. At my job there are servers running UNIX, the IBM IAX.
