How to take a screenshot on the Samsung Galaxy S4

Taking a screenshot on the Samsung Galaxy S4 is easy!

One of the cool things you can do with having a smartphone is being able to capture the current screen, in this case on the Samsung Galaxy S4! Doesn’t matter if it is a high score in Angry Birds or maybe just save some configuration settings on your phone that you don’t want to write down. You don’t need any third party applications through the Play Store or anything else.

You can take screenshots with your Samsung Galaxy S4 two different ways!

Method 1: Home Button + Lock Key

The first method of creating a screenshot can be done by simply pressing the lock key and Home button at the same time.

Hold down both buttons at the same time until you hear the camera shutter sound.

Directly after you will see a white outline flash around your screen and the notification bar on the top saying Saving screenshot…

That’s it, your screenshot has been saved on your Samsung Galaxy S4!

Method 2: Hand Swipe

For this method to work you need to do two things first:

  1. Ensure that you are not in the lock screen as it will not produce a screenshot work on the lock screen.
  2. Ensure that the Palm Motion and Capture Screen is enabled. To turn on this mode you must do the following.
    • Settings -> My Device -> Motions and gestures ->Palm Motion -> Capture Screen
      • Enable both Palm Motion and Capture Screen.

Now to take a screenshot you must swipe your hand from either left to right, or right to left.

You will hear the camera shutter sound.

Directly after you will see a white outline flash around your screen and the notification bar on the top saying Saving screenshot…

That’s it, your screenshot has been saved on your Samsung Galaxy S4!

No matter what method you choose a screenshot will always be saved in your photo gallery which can opened by opening the app icon found below:

These methods should also works on other Samsung smartphones as well.

I can’t take a screen shot in my new galaxy s4. I have trayed both ways and non of them work.

Tha palm motion option is active however when the test screen comen up, it doesn’t recognise the palm movement.

    Very frustraiting!

    Any suggestions?

    • Paul Thompson

I just realized that you need have you hand touching the screen moving left to right or vice-versa to get the screen capture. if your side if hand is not touching the screen then its not capturing.

      • draalin

        That’s correct!

    • MissLowry

it works it just doesnt read your palm like it should just move your hand slower or a little different. i had to mess with mine for a few

    • awesomeboy

Dude u might be doing it wrong

  • Gabriel Lozano-Moran

Same here does not work on the S4 :-(

  • sha aichella

    :( i cant use the 2nd method..
    why????

  • Kevin Burlington

    Thanks worked great.
If you are having problems you need to make sure you swipe correctly!!

  • winnarr

Yeah make sure you swipe correctly for the 2nd method, it is very tricky.

    :D

First method doesn’t work with me , i need to take a lock screenshot

  • tdswag

The palm method works for me, however, the lock and home button method doesn’t do anything. Also, after I do the palm method it directly takes me to edit the new screenshot. Any way to avoid/change this so I don’t have to waste time backing out of the edit mode?

    • MissLowry

yes you have to turn that option off

  • JohnZD

    Thanks mate, worked fine.

  • michelle

thanks for the info. but the hand gesture did not work for me. the first method worked but my pictures are saved on clipboard. where is clipboard

I triedddd, but the hand motion isn’t always working. Now I’m just karate chopping my phone out of frustration.

  • Paul Thompson

Both the options doesn’t work. Looks like Samsung has some bug in its software.

    Hi, there
With my S4, Method1 works fine but Method 2 – Hand swipe didnt work. I have cross verified the settings and its activated. Method 1 works in lock screen as well. Are there some bugs with Hand swipe method. can you please elobrate the stepwise process after the completion of settings to achive the same.

    • MissLowry

when you turn on the gesture actually click on it where u can turn it on and it will let you practice it too! that was you get it right before

  • Steve

    thank you, easy to follow.

  • Agha Zohaib Khan

great (y) both methods are easy and working 100% Thank you

    • draalin

      That’s great!

  • jinghijgy

the screenshot works, I hear the click/screen flashes the message saying saving screenshot appears at the top of the screen, but the image does not appear in ANY part of the gallery. very frustrating. I hate apple but at least it works :(

  • Health Coach Anne

      No problem!

  • Louu

I dont have a Caption Screen option in my Motion/Gestures settings so the swipe doesnt work for me but Lock+Home work fine!

  • mitrilrub

great both worked on my phone. Cheers

  • mrsourgit

Fuck your website is rammed with advertisements

  • NOOOOOOOooo

neither one works.. :( getting ready to throw in the towel n switch back to iPhone :'(

    • MissLowry

no dont do that, this phone is awesome if u learn it. I had to mess with both options to get them down. For the 1st one pushing both buttons, it kept turning the phone off but you have to push them exactly at the same time and i made sure if i pushed one even a millisecond first it was the home key, and the 2nd method you have to make sure the motion option is on and then you have to be actually touching the screen instead of above it like every other gesture

    • MissLowry

also when you turn on the gesture actually click on it where u can turn it on and it will let you practice it too! that was you get it right before

  • Omar

    Hello
thanks for your description but whenever I do it apart from the message says I “Saving screenshot…” can see the photo that I just took, i don’t want that, I only want to know that it has been captured, that’s it not to see the pop up and let me see the photo, sometimes i capture hundreds it makes the process very slow. please help me, thank you.

    • MissLowry

i believe that there is an option you can turn off to edit after capturing because mine do not pop up on in my notification bar
