How to update the iPhone 6

One of the best things about owning an iPhone 6, or any other iPhone in fact, is that you’ll be able to update your device for at least a couple of years. Unlike Android, where seeing a two-year-old device running the latest version of the OS is a rarity, iPhones and iPads often get upgrades three and even four years after their release. So how do you actually update the Apple iPhone? There are two ways – over the air and via iTunes.

How to Update the iPhone 6 Over the Air (OTA)

Over the Air Update

Updating an iPhone 6 over the air is hands-down the easiest way to go. There are, however, a few things to keep in mind:

  • Your phone will not function during the update process. So if you’re expecting an important call or a time-sensitive email, you should postpone the update process.
  • Your iPhone 6 will download potentially large files. Make sure that you’re on Wifi, so you don’t waste your mobile data.
  • Over-the-air updates need more space than what you see as their size. The reason for this is simple – the update is downloaded as an archive which then needs to be uncompressed in order to be used. On average, you’ll be required to have free space that is at least twice the size of the update you’re installing.
  • Your phone needs to have enough battery or you have to plug it in. The last thing Apple wants is to have iPhones running out of battery during the update process. To safeguard against this, a battery percentage restriction is placed prior to installing the update.

Let’s start:

1. Open the Settings app.

2. Navigate to General followed by Software Update.

3. Wait for the iPhone to check for updates. If updates are found, you’ll be given a small change log and possibly some instructions.

4. Tap the Download and Install button to begin the process.

5. Wait for the update process to finish. We recommend not touching the phone until it reboots and loads completely.

How to Update the iPhone 6 Via iTunes

iTunes Update

Updating your iPhone 6 via iTunes is not as convenient, but it is just as easy. Here are the things you need to keep in mind:

  • Your phone will not function during the update process. So if you’re expecting an important call or a time-sensitive email, you should postpone the update process.
  • Do not unplug your phone or shutdown your computer during the update process. Doing so can cause problems.
  • If you’re using a Windows PC, make sure you have the latest iTunes installed. If you’re not sure if you have the latest iTunes installed, run the Apple Software Update application from your Start screen. If you don’t have iTunes altogether, you can download it by going to www.apple.com/itunes
  • If you’re using a Mac, make sure iTunes is up to date. To check for updates, open iTunes and from the menu bar choose iTunes followed by Check for Updates.

Let’s start:

1. Connect your iPhone 6 to your computer and open iTunes.

2. Click on your device to reveal its page.

3. Press the Check for Updates button to see if there are new updates available. If iTunes has already detected that new updates are available, press the Update button.

4. You may be warned that there are purchases that are not transferred to your computer. Press Continue to dismiss the message. Alternatively, press Cancel and transfer the all purchases before proceeding.

5. A final dialog box will pop up asking you if you want to proceed. Press the Update button.

6. Wait for the process to complete. We recommend not using your phone and computer during this time.
