How to take a screenshot on a Nexus 5

First of all you made a great decision by buying the Google Nexus 5!  It is the fifth generation of the Nexus smartphone line running on the Android operating system. Though there is one more thing I would like to speak about before we get your Nexus 5 screenshot complete!

Don’t worry taking a screenshot on new Google Nexus 5 is pretty straight forward! But I just want to tell you first that there are third party applications you can download from the Google Play Store that have the ability to crop and edit screenshots if you are looking for something more than just a screen capture. But in this walk through we are only covering the built in application that Android comes with by default.

Remember you can take a screenshot of anything you want on your Nexus 5. Whether it is a high score of your favorite game or just some configuration settings that you want to save. Just like regular photos you can share screenshots with your friends the same way. Send it in an e-mail, text-message, or to any social media outlet you want.

Okay I’ll stop talking now so we get to the whole reason you are here, completing your Nexus 5 screenshot journey!

I took a few screenshots the first couple of days I had the phone to try it out, and now its no longer working. That’s the only thing that seems to be out of whack with the phone. Anybody know if there’s anything I can do about this?

Did you try rebooting your phone? Sometimes after installing tons of apps/updates it will mess things up.

Same issue for me too. It worked in the beginning but it doesn’t work anymore. I tried restarting but it still doesn’t work :( Any suggestions?

Cheers man that worked. I was initially trying to press Volume Up and Power. But the Volume Down worked like a charm :)

    Hey Tayler,

Its nice finding of taking screenshot on smartphone, I am using app for taking screen shot on my HD A116 micromax, and never know such a simple inbuilt screen capture option.

    Thanks for sharing

Works great, just had to try it a few times so the volume bar does not show up, got there eventually though. I have doen this by accident in the past and never known what it was I had pressed. Thanks for sharing.

it really isn’t that easy… and doesn’t help that volume down causes the screen to be partially obscured by the volume bar…. blocking me from seeing the thing I want to screenshot…. that and it doesn’t work at all.. I guess I’ll have to stick to photographing the nexus 5 screen with an ipad mini retina.

  • blackswan

It worked on my Nexus 5, realised the key was in the word “hold”, when both buttons are held down for a second, then the screen shot is taken.

Thanks!! Works for me for my Motorola Atrix 2 HD
